But just before graduation, that dream is shattered when an accident strips him of his commission and what he loved most. There is no future for washouts in the Corps, and running from his past, he can't seem to deal with the present. Then one day, he receives a phone call from Salt Lake City and is given one slim chance for a future in space, if he'll take an unusual assignment on The Angel Falls.
