The Forgiveness Index (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798188437480)

Dr. Claire Voss built Bondline to help people recognize healthy relationships-not surrender their choices to an algorithm.

Years later, the company she helped create is preparing to launch Certainty, a new product that promises to identify a user's ideal partner with unprecedented accuracy. Claire knows the claim exceeds anything her original work was designed to prove. But after being pushed out of Bondline's daily decisions, she has little power to stop it.

Investigative journalist Adam Keating has his own reasons for distrusting the company. His younger sister, Lila, was encouraged to remain in a damaging relationship while Bondline continued presenting renewed contact and repeated forgiveness as signs of compatibility. Adam believes the platform is not simply failing vulnerable users. He believes it may be learning how much mistreatment they will tolerate.

Then, during a public demonstration, Bondline declares Claire and Adam a 98.7 percent match.

The result should be impossible.

Forced into an uneasy partnership, Claire and Adam begin tracing changes made to her original model. What they uncover is more disturbing than a flawed dating system. Bondline has created a hidden measure that does not predict mutual happiness. It predicts which person is most likely to forgive, return, and remain engaged after trust has been broken.

As professional hostility gives way to respect-and respect becomes an attraction neither of them can dismiss-Claire and Adam establish careful rules for what they may ask, what they may reveal, and what must remain private. For the first time, Claire begins to imagine a relationship that cannot be reduced to data. Adam begins to understand that protecting someone does not give him the right to decide what they should know.

But when evidence suggests their extraordinary match was never generated by the system at all, the investigation becomes personal. A withheld truth threatens to prove that even a relationship built on consent can be damaged by someone convinced that silence is protection.

To stop Bondline's most dangerous product, Claire must confront the company carrying her name and the compromises that allowed it to change. Adam must decide whether exposing the truth matters more than controlling the story. And together, they must answer the only question no algorithm can resolve:

Can love remain real when the circumstances that brought two people together were designed by someone else?
