The Formation of Early Christian Liturgical Traditions (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798233501678)

The Formation of Early Christian Liturgical Traditions offers a sweeping historical and theological exploration of how Christian worship took shape during the first four centuries of the Church. Beginning with the religious world of Second Temple Judaism and the liturgical context of the Last Supper, the book traces the gradual emergence of Christian worship through apostolic communities, early Eucharistic celebrations, baptismal rites, sacred music, and the development of the liturgical calendar. Drawing extensively on Scripture, patristic writings, early church orders, archaeological discoveries, and historical scholarship, the study reveals how the foundational structures of Christian liturgy developed organically within the life of the early Church.

Through detailed analysis of figures such as Justin Martyr, Ambrose of Milan, Augustine of Hippo, Basil of Caesarea, and John Chrysostom, the book demonstrates how the theology of worship emerged alongside the liturgical practices themselves. It explores the rise of regional traditions, the formation of the Roman Rite, the role of sacred space and basilicas after Constantine, and the growing richness of the Christian liturgical year. By the end of the fourth century, the core elements of Christian worship-Eucharistic sacrifice, Scripture proclamation, sacramental initiation, sacred time, and liturgical music-had already assumed forms that would shape the Church's worship for centuries.

Accessible yet deeply scholarly, this work shows that early Christian liturgy was not an accidental accumulation of rituals but a coherent and living tradition rooted in apostolic faith. For historians, theologians, clergy, and readers interested in the foundations of Catholic worship, the book provides a compelling account of how the Church's most sacred practices were formed and why they continue to matter today.
