The author of The Galaxy Queen, John R. Rose, was born in south central Kansas and grew up in a rural setting. He had four younger brothers and three younger sisters. They all learned to work at an early age. They all developed a reading habit and that, in all likelihood, came about because their mother often told stories to her children as she worked. Rose became involved in athletic activities when he started to high school and was continually active, either as a competitor or a coach, until he retired from the teaching profession. He received his degree in education from Fort Hays State University and spent 37 years working with young adults in the Kansas public school system. Growing up, the author read and collected a great many of the characters that were popular back in the day. Those included, but were not limited to, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Tom Corbett, Tarzan, John Carter, The Lone Ranger, etc. He purchased comic books, Big Little Books, paperbacks and hardbacks. Being the oldest of the youngsters, it was impossible to keep anything in nice condition - the items were literally read to death by the time everyone got through with them. The author developed a reputation for daydreaming while he grew up, and the daydreaming eventually led to writing stories. Favorite authors included Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jim Kjelgaard, W.C. Tuttle, Max Brand, L. Frank Baum, Walt Morey, Jack O'Brien, William MacLeod Raine and a host of others. The author and his wife, Meredith, have two children. Son, Mike, lives in Colorado and daughter, Anne Marie lives in Arizona.
