The answer to How turned out to be a supercomputer that had turned itself off to prevent his global telescope from identifying any more biological sentient planets

The reawakened supercomputer, Gentle Eye becomes a part of the Cosmos team.

It's desire is to be "just one of the guys" on Joe's team.

The Gentle Eye indeed becomes a team member and on his first transit through the Hole to another galaxy saves the Cosmos team from certain annihilation.
