The Golden Peacock (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781918746631)

In a close-knit English town founded on post-war ideals of unity and diversity, two teenage girls from different South Asian family backgrounds form an instant, unbreakable friendship that pulls them into a century-old mystery.

Jesse, artistic and precise, lives with her ambitious barrister mother Jag and her brothers. She treasures a delicate antique necklace of sapphire-like stones and a tiny key, passed down from her late Nani. Jenna has just moved to the town with her family after her mother Lailanoor becomes Jag's new law partner. Still grieving her own Nani, Jenna begins sorting through an intricately carved Indian rosewood chest filled with letters, clippings, photographs, and carefully preserved treasures from her grandmother's life in India.

When the girls meet at a family gathering, they quickly discover uncanny parallels between their grandmothers' heirlooms - matching beads on worn black thread and references to the same hidden past. A leather-bound journal written partly in Urdu and partly in English, a shimmering golden peacock mentioned in hushed 1897 Amritsar memories, and a trail of clues hidden across generations begin to surface.

As Jesse and Jenna navigate school, new friendships, family expectations, and the everyday joys and pressures of teenage life in multicultural Britain, they are drawn deeper into their shared history. The story moves between the girls' contemporary world and the dramatic events of 1897, revealing how one secret act involving a legendary golden peacock still echoes more than a hundred years later.

Rich in cultural detail, warm family dynamics, and authentic teenage voices, The Golden Peacock is a heartfelt coming-of-age mystery that explores identity, resilience, the bonds of friendship, and the power of legacies that refuse to stay buried. Perfect for readers who love contemporary young adult fiction interwoven with historical intrigue, this debut novel by Sabeena Sheikh celebrates the beauty of heritage while reminding us that some treasures are meant to be rediscovered by the next generation.
