Professor Sharkey earned his PhD in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame and a post doctoral Masters of Public Health degree from the University of Southern Mississippi where he held professorships in philosophy and religion, community health, and a clinical assistant professorship in psychiatry and human behavior at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. Twice listed in Who's Who in Religion, his interests span the interface of philosophy, science, religion and mental health. He has been an active member in a wide variety array of professional and religious organizations and has won awards for excellence in teaching and academic scholarship. Now retired, he lives with his wife, Novia, their three small dogs, sheep, goats, and chickens atop the Cumberland Plateau in north-east-central Tennessee.
