The Gospel Before the Empire: How Africa Helped Build Christianity, and What Colonialism Tried to Erase (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798189812910)

Christianity did not come to Africa with European missionaries.

By the time the first Portuguese ship reached the coast of Kongo, Africa had already been Christian for over a thousand years. Ethiopia had a state church since the fourth century. Alexandria was the intellectual capital of the early faith. The men who built Christian theology, Tertullian, Origen, Athanasius, Augustine, were African.

That history was buried. This book puts it back.

The Gospel Before the Empire walks through the evidence from the Hebrew Bible to the independence movements. It shows what colonial Christianity did, what it could not touch, and what African Christians did with a tradition their own ancestors helped build.

Written for anyone who was told the faith was foreign, and wants to know what the record actually shows.
