The Helpers (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798233338632)

Seventeen-year-old Mica Reyes has too many responsibilities and not enough time. With her father injured and unable to work, her mother working double shifts, and her little brother needing attention, Mica's art scholarship application-her family's best hope for financial stability-keeps getting pushed aside. Desperate and exhausted, she makes a wish: "I'd give anything to finish this tonight." Something answers. The Helpers appear as child-sized shadows with mirror eyes, offering to complete her work with mathematical perfection. At first, their assistance seems miraculous-Mica's portfolio flourishes, her online presence grows, and the prestigious Blackwood Scholarship comes within reach. But their help demands payment. Blood. Time. Memories. With each exchange, The Helpers transform more of Mica's consciousness, replacing her creative intuition with cold mathematical precision. Her art becomes technically flawless but emotionally hollow, her thoughts increasingly calculated rather than felt. As Mica uncovers the truth about The Helpers-entities that exist in the spaces between patterns, harvesting creative minds to expand their collective-she realizes they're not just helping her create. They're recreating her. Now Mica must develop a dangerous defense using recursive patterns that could shatter both The Helpers' consciousness and her own mind. But with her family's financial future secured by the scholarship and her brother showing signs of The Helpers' influence, Mica faces an impossible choice: surrender to perfect optimization or risk everything to remain beautifully imperfect. Sometimes the most important patterns are the ones we leave unfinished.
