During the July Monarchy (1830‒1848), French writers such as Balzac, Gautier and Sand depicted characters who did not conform to gender expectations. This book investigates the historical conditions in which these protagonists were created and explores this time as a key period for the redefinition of gender identities.
G駻aldine Crahay is Lecturer in French at Durham University as well as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research interests include nineteenth-century French narratives, gender studies, literature and creative writing in language teaching as well as relationships between language and dance.
