The Hidden Backstreets of Bath: Exploring Bath's Secret Courtyards, Hidden Passages, and the Quiet Spaces Most Visitors Never See (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798257737961)

FIND THE BATH THAT LOCALS KNOW AND MOST VISITORS NEVER SEEYou have been to Bath before, or you have always wanted to go. Either way, you already know what most visitors find there. The Roman Baths. The Royal Crescent. Pulteney Bridge. The queues, the crowds, the feeling that the city is performing for you rather than actually letting you in. You walk the main streets, you admire the Georgian architecture, you take the photographs, and you leave with a nagging sense that something was missing. Something quieter. Something more real.
That feeling is not your imagination. It is evidence.
The Bath that most visitors experience is a fraction of the city that actually exists. Behind the famous facades and beyond the main circuit lies a parallel city of secret courtyards where the noise of the street disappears the moment you step through an archway, covered passages that cut between busy roads and smell of cold stone and older air, forgotten lanes with names that predate the Georgian development by centuries, hillside gardens that look out over the rooftops in extraordinary silence, and ancient village communities absorbed into the city boundary but still living on their own terms, at their own pace, entirely indifferent to the tourist economy a short walk away. This is the Bath that rewards the traveller who is willing to look a little more carefully than the person walking alongside them.
This guide was written for exactly that traveller. Not the visitor who wants to tick off the highlights in a single efficient afternoon, but the one who wants to understand a place rather than simply pass through it. The culturally curious, the unhurried, the traveller who finds more satisfaction in discovering a hidden courtyard by following an instinct than in standing in front of a famous facade with five hundred other people. If that sounds like you, then this guide was written with you specifically in mind.
Inside, you will find:

• Five secret courtyards hidden in plain sight within minutes of the city centre, including spaces that even regular Bath visitors walk past without ever noticing
• A network of covered passages and forgotten back lanes that connect different levels and different eras of the city in ways that no standard map reveals
• The quiet residential streets of the upper slopes where the real character of Georgian Bath survives without the crowds or the performance
• Overlooked gardens and green spaces, from a hillside park with extraordinary rooftop views to an enclosed beekeeping garden tucked inside a well-known park that almost nobody finds
• Hidden churches and quiet chapels, each with its own distinct atmosphere and its own quality of stillness that the famous abbey cannot provide alone
• Independent shops and cafes along streets that serve the city's own community rather than its visiting population
• Riverside and canal paths that take you out of the city entirely while keeping you within its boundaries
• Forgotten burial grounds of remarkable beauty and atmosphere and five ancient village communities sitting within Bath's boundary, each with its own high street, its own parish church
• Two fully planned walking itineraries, one for half a day and one for a full day, that bring the best of the hidden city together into routes you can follow immediately on arrival

Bath has been hiding its best self from most of its visitors for a very long time. Every quiet courtyard, every forgotten lane, every early morning garden and canal path and tucked-away village street in these pages is waiting to be found, and this guide will take you directly to them.
