The Hidden Mosaic: The Struggle for France's Regional Languages (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798187975907)

The Hidden Mosaic Under the Republic is a comprehensive exploration of the seventy-five regional languages that exist beneath the surface of official French monolingualism. From the Celtic cadences of Brittany to the ancient mystery of Basque and the Mediterranean warmth of Corsican, the book traces the history of these 'unsilenced voices.' It details centuries of state-sponsored suppression-from the 1539 Edict of Villers-Cotterêts to the 'symbole' punishments of the Jules Ferry era-while celebrating the resilience of communities that refused to let their mother tongues die. The book moves beyond historical grievance to showcase a modern renaissance driven by immersion schools, grassroots activism, and digital innovation, such as Occitan video game translations. By examining the phenomenon of 'glottophobie' (accent discrimination) and the current legal battles over constitutional heritage, the author argues that linguistic diversity is not a threat to French unity but its true cultural fabric. This work offers a vital perspective for anyone seeking to understand the real France beyond the Parisian standard, revealing a nation defined not by one voice, but by a rich, submerged chorus of seventy-five.
