The remarkable story of The Historic Mars Hill Anderson Rosenwald School: Our Story, This Place brings to life the ongoing history of one of the few remaining Rosenwald school buildings in North Carolina. More than 5,000 of these rural schools were built through a unique collaboration between Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald of Sears, Roebuck & Co. between 1913 and 1932. Their purpose was to make education available to southern black children who were either denied the right to go to school at all or whose education was limited, truncated, or minimized by the scourges of racism, segregation, and Jim Crow-era legislation. Our Story, This Place documents the history of this particular school, in Mars Hill, North Carolina, through official documents, first-hand accounts, memories by alumni and faculty, and those whose own lives were impacted by the school.
