The History of the 19th (Service) Battalion (2nd Public Works) Middlesex Regiment: A John Ward Battalion (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798252847573)

The History of the 19th (Service) Battalion (2nd Public Works Pioneers) Middlesex Regiment tells the story of one of the First World War's unusual battalions, raised John Ward MP. Drawing on the battalion's war diary, this book follows the 19th Middlesex from its formation in London through the Somme, Arras, Messines, Passchendaele, the Italian Front, the German Spring Offensive, and the final advance in 1918.

Raised from navvies, labourers, and skilled working men, the 19th (Service) Battalion (2nd Public Works Pioneers) Middlesex Regiment was no ordinary infantry unit. It was a battalion built for labour as much as combat, and its story reveals how the skills of civilian working men helped sustain the British Army on the Western Front.

This book transcribes and interprets the battalion's war diary in full, placing each entry in its wider military and historical context. From trench digging on the Somme to road-building, drainage, and pioneer work under fire in Flanders and Italy, the battalion's daily experience is brought to life in a way that makes the diary accessible to general readers, family historians, and students of the Great War.

At the heart of the story is John Ward, whose leadership and working-class background shaped the battalion's identity. Readers who know Ward from John Ward: Navvy, Politician, Soldier will find this volume an essential companion, showing how his wartime battalions operated and what they endured.
