In 2012, after his marriage to Marissa collapses, Dan keeps the Hollow Creek house so that fourteen-year-old Ali and sixteen-year-old Tessa will not lose their rooms, school, friends, or routines along with their mother. He believes stability can be built through practical care: groceries, mortgage payments, season passes, clean sheets, rules, and a home that remains theirs. When Ali helps name a rescue puppy Moka, the dog becomes a steady presence in a family that has stopped trusting permanence.

Dan's work as a field specialist, however, sends him repeatedly out of town and overseas. He misses school events, games, and ordinary evenings. His longtime friend Gary helps keep the house running, but Ali increasingly experiences Gary's reliability as proof of her father's absence.

When Tessa, influenced by her mother's anger, makes an allegation against Dan, the county investigates. The case is closed without further action, but the damage is permanent: Tessa leaves the house, and Dan's belief that a home can protect everyone begins to fail.

Ali's adolescence grows more volatile. After becoming entangled with Cody and a party shooting, she receives a ten-month court-mandated placement. Dan changes jobs so he can visit her every week, but when she returns, the household has changed again. Rachel and her son Noah have become part of Dan's life, and Ali cannot decide whether their kindness is welcome or another sign that she has been replaced.

Dan and Rachel eventually marry. When work, finances, and opportunity lead them to sell the Hollow Creek house and move to Florida, Ali refuses to go. To Dan, he has offered flights, a room, money, and an open door. To Ali, he has broken the one promise that mattered most: that the house would remain hers.

Years later, Dan continues to send help when Ali needs it, but every transfer, photograph, and unanswered message carries the weight of what neither can say. Moka's death brings the conflict to the surface. Dan does not publicly answer Ali's comment. Ali cannot bring herself to delete it or apologize.

The novel ends without an easy reconciliation. Dan keeps Moka's blanket, uncertain what to do with the physical remains of a life he tried to preserve. Ali places an old photograph of Moka beside her bed. Both are left with the same difficult truth: love survived, but it did not always arrive in the form either of them needed.
