The Human in the Machine: How to Lead When AI Runs the System (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798199613200)

THE MACHINE HAS ENTERED THE SYSTEM. THE HUMAN MUST DECIDE WHAT THE SYSTEM IS FOR.

AI now shapes decisions in hospitals, classrooms, courtrooms, boardrooms, and public institutions. It moves faster than we can blink, processes more than we can read, and optimizes more than we can oversee. But speed is not wisdom. Optimization is not purpose. And no machine can answer the question at the center of every human system:

What are we trying to become?

In The Human in the Machine, David Allway reveals the five invisible forces that quietly reshape institutions when AI enters the loop: Speed, Drift, Deference, Atrophy, and Opacity. Through vivid cases from healthcare, education, justice, and industry, he shows how these forces push organizations toward outcomes no one would have chosen - and how leaders can reclaim the human advantage before harm hardens into habit.
You will learn:

• Why AI is not a tool - it is a node
• How fast feedback loops amplify excellence or accelerate harm
• Why judgment, presence, and purpose are now scarce resources
• How to recognize drift and pull the organization back
• How to keep teams sharp in an age of cognitive offloading
• How to lead AI without becoming machine-like yourself

Each chapter ends with a Monday Morning action - a concrete step you can take this week to strengthen your system, sharpen your people, and restore the human capacities that AI cannot replace.

This is not a book about technology.

It is a book about leadership when technology is everywhere - and a call to every executive, clinician, teacher, judge, officer, analyst, coach, engineer, and public servant who senses that something human is being lost and knows it is their job to protect it.

AI does not replace the human advantage. AI reveals it.
