Jane Werner Watson (1915-2004) was the original editor of Little Golden Books, and the author of numerous Golden Books herself, many of which were illustrated by the great children's illustrators of the mid-twentieth century. Some of her bestselling titles include The Fuzzy Duckling (illustrated by Martin and Alice Provensen), Animal Friends (illustrated by Garth Williams), and My Little Golden Book About God, The Christmas Story, and Wonders of Nature (all illustrated by Eloise Wilkin).

Alice Provensen (1918--2018) and Martin Provensen (1916--1987) illustrated over forty bookstogether, nineteen of which they also edited and illustrated. They were runners-up for the Caldecott Medal in 1982 for their illustrations of Nancy Willard's A Visit to William Blake's Inn and won the Caldecott in 1984 for a book they wrote and illustrated themselves, The Glorious Flight. Eight of their books have been named a New York Times Ten Best Illustrated Books of the Year.They lived for many years in Dutchess County, NY.
