The Impassibility of God: A Survey of Christian Thought (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025735085)

"The Impassibility of God, a Survey of Christian Thought" is a comprehensive theological investigation into one of the most significant and debated attributes of the Divine in Christian tradition. Written by John Kenneth Mozley, this work meticulously traces the development of the doctrine of divine impassibility-the belief that God is not subject to suffering or external emotional influence-from the early Church Fathers through the Middle Ages and into the modern era.

Mozley explores how this concept has been interpreted, defended, and challenged by various theologians and philosophical schools, examining its implications for the understanding of the Incarnation, the Passion of Christ, and the nature of God's relationship with humanity. By providing a scholarly historical overview, the text sheds light on the tensions between Greek philosophical influence and biblical revelation. This study remains an essential resource for students of systematic theology and church history, offering a clear and detailed roadmap of how Christian thought has grappled with the profound question of whether God can suffer. It stands as a rigorous analysis of a foundational tenet that continues to shape contemporary theological discourse.
