The Influence of St. Gregory's Moralia in Job on Medieval Spirituality (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798235347588)

The story of Job has always unsettled and fascinated Christian readers, but in the hands of Gregory the Great it became something far more than a biblical narrative about suffering. It became a vast spiritual landscape, a mirror in which the soul could see itself, a grammar for interpreting the movements of grace, temptation, and divine pedagogy. Gregory's Moralia in Job is one of the most ambitious works of biblical interpretation in Christian history-thirty-five books, written over many years, weaving literal exposition, moral exhortation, and allegorical vision. Its influence on medieval spirituality is difficult to overstate. For centuries, monks, clerics, preachers, mystics, and lay readers turned to the Moralia not simply to understand Job but to understand themselves, their communities, and the God who shapes human lives through trial and mercy.

This book explores that influence in depth. It traces how Gregory's reading of Job shaped medieval imagination, devotion, and theological reflection. It examines how the Moralia became a foundational text for monastic formation, pastoral care, mystical theology, and the broader spiritual culture of the Middle Ages. And it seeks to show why this monumental commentary-so often overshadowed today by Gregory's Pastoral Rule or his Dialogues-was once considered indispensable for anyone seeking to understand the Christian life.
