The Innovators: Canadian Inventions That Changed the World But Forgot to Take Credit (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798181199385)

Canada produced insulin, the telephone, the electron microscope, IMAX, the Canadarm, and the BlackBerry. It invented the snowblower, the paint roller, the garbage bag, and the electric wheelchair. Its scientists identified the gene for cystic fibrosis, demonstrated the existence of stem cells, and developed the lipid nanoparticle technology that made mRNA vaccines possible. And yet for every world-changing discovery made in Canada, the credit has too often drifted elsewhere - to American companies, American patents, American institutions.

The Innovators is the fifth and final volume of the Canada's Hidden History series. It examines twelve Canadian inventions and discoveries that changed the world, and asks the uncomfortable question: why has Canada been so reluctant to fully claim what its people have built?

From Frederick Banting's insulin breakthrough in a borrowed University of Toronto laboratory to the rise and fall of BlackBerry in Waterloo, Ontario, Fraser J. Mackay traces a consistent pattern: discovery made in Canada, commercialized elsewhere, credit inadequately retained. With the same narrative drive and historical rigour that defined the first four volumes in the series, The Innovators is both a celebration of Canadian ingenuity and an honest reckoning with the institutional failures that have surrounded it.

The Canada's Hidden History series concludes here - not with defeat, but with an argument: Canada is more remarkable than its comfortable self-description allows, and building a country that fully deserves what its people produce is work worth doing.
