The author was born in North Carolina and has been a licensed attorney in the state of New York for over thirty-five years. She is a 1978 graduate of the City College of New York and a 1981 graduate of Howard University School of Law. As an attorney, Phillis clerked for two federal judges and one state judge. She also worked as an assistant supervising attorney for the Human Resources Administration and a supervising attorney for the Department of Housing Preservation and Development and sat as a hearing officer for the Transit Adjudication Bureau of New York. She is a spoken word artist and gives lectures and speeches on domestic violence, contemporary Christian values and African American studies and is also the author of a book of poetry, prose and spoken word entitled "The Colors of Wind in Water."
