Larry W. Owen was born on September 27, 1946, one of the firstborn of the post-war baby boom. His formative years were spent in Green Township, Noble County, Indiana. He was born of the Spirit at the Green Center Evangelical United Brethren Church before reaching his teen years. A graduate of Albion-Jefferson High School in Albion, Indiana, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1969. After college he served two years active duty in the Army Reserve, including one year in Viet Nam. His career has been as a Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor both in private practice and public service in Adams and Wells Counties in Indiana. Through his position with the Wells County, Indiana, Highway Department, as Highway Engineer, he became acquainted with the interurban era and subsequently the Kingsland Wreck. Discovering that no mass memorial to this tragic event existed, he was led to investigate further and produce this memorial. He lives in Bluffton, Indiana, with his wife Diane, a teacher retired from teaching children with special needs.
