The Last Season: Slow Burn Romance in the Australian Outback (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798177515762)

The Last Season is a deeply romantic, emotionally rich and steamy Australian Outback novel set against the vast, ancient, flat-horizon Mitchell grass plains of the Northern Territory's Barkly Tablelands, one of Australia's most extraordinary and most underwritten landscapes, where the Mitchell grass runs to the horizon in every direction and the sky is so large that the self becomes temporarily irrelevant. When documentary filmmaker Lena Cross arrives at Cullen Downs Station in the East Barkly to film the last operating season of a third-generation cattle station, she expects a professional assignment. She does not expect Reid Cullen. Third-generation Barkly station owner, thirty-nine, alone for five years, Reid has declined two corporate buyouts and chosen to end the station honestly rather than let it continue under the investors' name in a form that would have required him to become something other than what he is. He has been the station in a person-shaped form his entire life and he does not know what he is without it. Lena comes with a camera and the specific quality of a filmmaker from Longreach country enough to understand the Barkly, not so far inside it that she's lost the ability to see it from the outside, and she begins to film the most honest subject she's ever had. What builds between them builds the way the Barkly builds things, slowly, through the accumulation of ordinary extraordinary days, the bore run and the fence work and the formal interviews and a pair of oversized gloves on a cold May morning and the bones of the colour in the south-eastern paddock and the frost on the Mitchell grass in July. It builds through twelve weeks of the camera as the distance between them and through the moment in the July frost when she puts the camera down and takes his hand and the distance is gone. When the road train logistics fall apart three weeks before the muster and Reid is at the edge of managing alone, Lena is there, not behind the camera but beside him, and the slow burn ignites into something that is the heat of two people who have been paying the right quality of attention to each other for months and who are done paying it from a distance. From the last muster of the last season to the investor agreement that changes the ending into a beginning to the premiere of The Last Season in Sydney to the wedding in the south-eastern paddock in June to the wet season's first rain and the third documentary that is going to take years to make, The Last Season is a celebration of the slow-burning, deeply steamy love that grows between two people in one of Australia's most magnificent landscapes, and of the specific extraordinary truth that the real thing, the bones, the roots, the underground part, is always three times larger than what you can see.
