Some may ask, during a review of what follows, if this story, which is, by its very nature, a story, is a fictional account or a nonfictional one. In anticipation of that question, may I suggest to the reader, even before he becomes one, that the answer may actually transcend either one of those two alternatives, without seeming to do so, just as a myth, by definition, may be real and unreal, and at the very same time, too, having often begun in the former and ending in the latter. In so far as this story may have succeeded in doing both, then and now, I suggest that whatever else it may be, or have been, it is probably more mythical than anything else.
Having said that, or arrived at that kind of a conclusion, I caution you that, not unlike the mythical, not everything that follows could have conceivably taken place, not as I have described it, anyway, seventy years later; but do not be mistaken: this did happen and so did those who made it legendarily happen, or, if you prefer, at least at this point in time, a myth!
