The Light We Left On (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798189668449)

Tomás has built a career out of removing from photographs everything that makes a house look lived in: toys beneath sofas, blankets left on chairs, crooked objects, the untidy evidence of an ordinary life.

Without realising it, he has done much the same with his own.

Work always comes first. Phone calls can wait. Cancelled plans can be rearranged. There will always be another visit, another Sunday, another chance to arrive on time.

Then his mother calls.

Her cancer treatment is no longer working, and Elvira has decided to spend whatever time remains in the family home. Tomás returns carrying a suitcase, a list of practical solutions and a train ticket back for four days later. He intends to speak to the doctors, organise the care she needs and restore some order before returning to his life.

But the house refuses to fit inside his schedule.

His father, Gabriel, sleeps in fragments beside Elvira's bed. His nine-year-old son, Lucas, has learnt not to complain when promises are broken. Berta, the ageing family dog, waits beside doors for people who may not return. And Elvira-sharp-witted, stubborn and unmistakably herself-does not need her son to rescue her.

She only needs him to stay.

As the days grow narrower, Tomás begins to understand that love rarely announces itself through grand declarations. Sometimes it is hidden inside a handwritten medication log, a badly tied scarf, a meal barely tasted, a hand held through the night or a kitchen light left on for whoever has yet to come home.

The Light We Left On is a tender, quietly heartbreaking novel about family, caregiving, regret, grief and second chances. A story about the people we love imperfectly, the ordinary moments that become sacred-and the doors we can still choose to walk through before it is too late.
