The Lions of Piazza Grande: The Engineering Marvels and History of the Duomo di Modena Complex (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798235177956)

Can stone truly hold the prayers of a thousand years?

When the citizens of Modena laid the foundation stone of their cathedral on June 9, 1099, they lacked both a bishop and financial guarantees. Yet, driven by an unyielding desire to house the sacred relics of Saint Geminianus, they raised a Romanesque masterpiece that has endured for centuries. In The Lions of Piazza Grande: The Engineering Marvels and History of the Duomo di Modena Complex, author Bernard de Clare takes you past standard tourist summaries and into the living heart of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Written for readers who want to experience history through a spiritual lens, this volume uncovers every layer of the cathedral's construction. Discover how master architect Lanfranco repurposed ancient Roman stones to erect a sanctuary of light and endurance. Step up to the facade to examine Wiligelmo's expressive Genesis friezes-carvings that functioned as a visual scripture for medieval pilgrims entering the house of God.

Journey beneath the elevated choir into the crypt, where Saint Geminianus's tomb rests among a forest of marble pillars. Follow the evolution of the sanctuary as the Maestri Campionesi added the breathtaking rose window and built the Torre della Ghirlandina, creating a soaring beacon of faith over Emilia-Romagna. De Clare blends rigorous historical detail with spiritual reflection, bringing to life the master builders, clergy, and ordinary believers who poured their devotion into this sacred complex.

Whether you are a history enthusiast seeking a thorough account of medieval Romanesque engineering or a Catholic reader exploring Italy's holy places, this book offers an engaging and inspiring account. Experience how faith, art, and brilliant craftsmanship converged on Piazza Grande to build an enduring testament to the Divine.

When you stand before the ancient lions guarding the portal, will you see mere ancient marble, or will you feel the timeless pulse of a faith that built the West?
