The Long Listening: She was never allowed to say what she heard. This is what it cost her to listen. (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798185008058)

Scarborough, 1941. Eleanor Hartley arrives at a requisitioned hotel above the North Sea with a railway warrant, a recruiting officer's vague assurance that she has 'an aptitude for order, ' and no idea that she is about to spend the war listening to a silence that almost no one is permitted to know exists.
The Y Service is the unglamorous, unphotographed backbone of Britain's signals intelligence war - the wireless operators whose patient, anonymous interception work feeds the raw material that becomes, at Bletchley Park, Ultra. Eleanor learns to copy German naval traffic in the small hours, to hold a secret so total she cannot tell her own mother what she does, and to live inside a particular discipline: the not-knowing. She will rarely learn what her own work was actually used for. She must learn to carry that not-knowing as the ordinary condition of the job, rather than wait, fruitlessly, for a confirmation that will not come.
Around her: Tom Heyworth, a despatch rider whose quiet attention she notices herself noticing; Peggy Hale, the friend who makes the war's long isolation bearable, until the SS Aguila is torpedoed in the Atlantic and the war's cost arrives at Eleanor's own door with eleven empty chairs at Scarborough's watch rotation; and Hutton, the watch-keeper whose hard-won distinction - between operators who learn to hold the not-knowing, and those who wait, fruitlessly, for a confirmation that never comes - becomes the discipline that carries Eleanor through the rest of her war, and the rest of her life.
Grounded in the real, only recently declassified history of the Royal Navy's Scarborough Y-station - its role in the hunt for the Bismarck, its overnight relocation to a bomb-proof bunker without a single missed watch, and the real, named Wrens lost aboard the Aguila - The Long Listening is a novel about the particular cost of secrecy: what it takes from a person to hold a silence for a lifetime, and what, against all expectation, it can also give.
For readers of Kate Quinn, Pam Jenoff, and anyone who has ever wondered what the women who 'did clerical work during the war' actually did.
