Description
xBetween the ages of twelve and thirty, the Gospels fall almost entirely silent about Jesus of Nazareth.
For over a century, one of the most persistent and controversial theories in religious history has tried to fill that silence: that Jesus spent his missing years traveling through India - studying the Vedas under Brahmin teachers in Puri and Rajagriha, meditating on the banks of the Ganges at Banaras, and retreating into Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas. A separate, equally contested tradition goes further still, claiming Jesus survived the crucifixion and lived out his final years in Kashmir, where a modest shrine in Srinagar is still venerated today as his tomb.
Where did these claims actually come from? A Russian journalist's disputed 1887 encounter with ancient manuscripts in a remote Himalayan monastery. A respected Bengali monk's independent investigation two decades later. A Punjabi religious reformer's detailed theological argument. And, standing against all of it, more than a century of rigorous scholarly scrutiny - from Oxford philologists to modern forensic historians.
THE LOST YEARS traces this remarkable story from its origins to the present day, examining: - The "silent years" and what the canonical Gospels do and don't say - Nicolas Notovitch and the discovery of the Life of Saint Issa - The specific Indian cities, teachers, and traditions named in the legend - The ancient trade routes that made such a journey genuinely possible - The Kashmir tomb tradition and the mystery of Yuz Asaf - The scholarly case against the theory - and how believers have answered it - Why this story continues to fascinate readers across four major world religions
This is not a devotional book, and it doesn't ask you to believe or disbelieve. It's a clear-eyed, fully sourced investigation into one of history's most enduring religious mysteries - written for readers who want the whole story, from every side, so they can decide for themselves.
