The Medical Miracles of Lourdes: Seventy-Two Recognized Cures, and the Rigorous Process Behind Them (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798188603670)

For more than a century and a half, millions of the sick have travelled to a small town in the French Pyrenees. More than seven thousand have declared themselves cured. The Catholic Church has recognized exactly seventy-two of those cures as miraculous - and the distance between those two numbers is the real subject of this book.

The Medical Miracles of Lourdes tells the stories of the recognized cures with an unusual discipline: it never blurs what a patient felt, what the doctors recorded, and what the Church concluded. Each case passed through the Bureau des Constatations Médicales - very likely the longest-running and most demanding medical vetting of claimed healings anywhere in the world, open to believing, skeptical, and frankly hostile physicians alike - and satisfied seven exacting criteria before any bishop was permitted to speak of a miracle.

Here are the cases that survived that filter: a soldier whose destroyed hip bone reappeared on later X-rays; a nun who left her wheelchair after four decades; a wounded sailor whose cure waited a hundred years for its verdict. Alongside them stand the objections, the dissenting votes, and the cases medicine still cannot close - reported as honestly as the cures themselves.

This is not a book that asks you to believe. It asks you to look at the record - the diagnoses, the sequences of X-rays, the signed statements, the careful institutional judgments - and to weigh, for yourself, what a firm medical prognosis being overturned actually means.

Written for the physician, the historian, the skeptic, and the believer alike.
