The Memoirs of Lieut. Henry Timberlake (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781025833033)

"The Memoirs of Lieut. Henry Timberlake" provides an invaluable firsthand account of the Appalachian frontier and the Cherokee people during the mid-18th century. Following the Anglo-Cherokee War, Henry Timberlake, a British officer, volunteered for a diplomatic mission to the Overhill Cherokee settlements. His detailed narrative offers a rare and significant glimpse into the social structures, daily lives, and cultural practices of the Cherokee Nation at a pivotal moment in American history.

This work is highly regarded for its ethnographic detail, including descriptions of town houses, traditional ceremonies, and military customs, as well as its documentation of the complex relationship between the British military and Indigenous leaders. Timberlake's journey eventually led to his accompaniment of a Cherokee delegation to London, an event that fascinated the British public and underscored the diplomatic importance of his mission.

As a foundational primary source for historians and anthropologists, "The Memoirs of Lieut. Henry Timberlake" remains a cornerstone of colonial literature. It captures the tensions and alliances of the frontier, providing essential insights into the early American landscape and the enduring legacy of the Cherokee people.
