The Missionary Instructions of St. Innocent of Alaska (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798349344220)

The Missionary Instructions of St. Innocent of Alaska - First Scholarly English Translation

Before his glorification as the Apostle to America, St. Innocent of Alaska (Ivan Veniaminov) served among the Aleut peoples of Russian Alaska, bringing the Orthodox Christian faith to the remote frontier of the North Pacific. This volume presents his Missionary Instructions in a complete English translation for the first time - an essential primary source for Orthodox Christians, church historians, and students of Christian missions.

Written during St. Innocent's Alaska period and preserved in the collected works published in Saint Petersburg, these instructions offer a timeless manual for missionary conduct, pastoral care, and spiritual formation. Rooted in humility, patience, and love, his guidance shaped generations of Orthodox missionaries across the Russian Empire and remains strikingly relevant for anyone engaged in Christian ministry today.

Inside this volume:

• The complete Missionary Instructions of St. Innocent, newly translated into scholarly English
• Historical context situating these texts within the Orthodox missionary world of the nineteenth century
• Insight into the methods by which Orthodoxy took root among the Aleut peoples and across the North Pacific
• Spiritual principles from one of the most consequential missionary figures in Orthodox history

St. Innocent of Alaska was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1977 and by the Orthodox Church in America in 1994. His missionary legacy remains visible across Alaska to this day.
