The Moods of Ginger Mick (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9789374594438)

Beneath the dust and laughter of a Sydney backstreet, the pulse of a nation at war beats in the quick wit and raw honesty of a working man. Through rain-slicked pavements and the smoky warmth of a pub, the everyday world of the Australian soldier and his mates comes alive-by turns raucous, tender, and unflinchingly real. This volume gathers a series of narrative poems that capture the spirit of the Australian bush and the grit of the city, threading together the camaraderie, humour, and heartbreak of World War One as seen through the eyes of those who lived it. With a voice steeped in Aussie slang and the rhythms of working class life, these verses explore the tangled loyalties and fierce identity forged in the trenches and the streets alike. The collection stands out for its ability to blend biting humour with moments of quiet sorrow, offering a portrait of wartime camaraderie that is both deeply personal and unmistakably Australian. The poems do not shy away from the contradictions of the soldier's experience: the longing for home, the bonds of mateship, and the ever-present shadow of loss. Early 20th century poetry rarely speaks so directly to the realities of its time-here, the larrikin spirit is balanced by a genuine empathy for the men who bore the burdens of conflict and the families who waited behind. The language, rich with Australian idiom and bush life, invites readers into a world where identity is shaped in the crucible of adversity, and where even the darkest moments are lit by flashes of wit. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations. This edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
