The Mortician (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798235136786)

Elias Vane has spent his life giving the dead the dignity the living denied them. Then he begins deciding who deserves to reach his table.

For decades, Elias has operated Vane & Sons Funeral Home with meticulous devotion. He cleans every wound, restores every face, and listens patiently as grieving families struggle to say goodbye. In a profession slowly disappearing beneath direct cremations and forgotten ceremonies, his hands remain certain-even as his purpose begins to fade.

The dead are quiet. Grateful, in their way. Complete.

The living are careless, loud, selfish, and cruel.

When a powerful local businessman nearly runs Elias down and responds with contempt, a private resentment takes root. What begins as an intrusive thought gradually becomes a conviction: some people make the world worse simply by remaining in it. When Elias finally acts, the stillness that follows does not horrify him.

It feels like peace.

Soon, other deaths begin to look accidental. A fall. A drowning. A body claimed by the river. Elias continues comforting families and preparing the dead with extraordinary tenderness, convinced that he has done nothing more than correct the timing of the inevitable.

Then Mara Holt arrives.

Serious, observant, and determined to learn the mortician's craft, Mara becomes the apprentice Elias never expected to need. Her presence brings life back into the empty funeral home-but she also notices what others overlook: the dates in his private ledger, the deaths occurring along his walking routes, and the quiet certainty of a man who seems to understand certain bodies before they arrive.

As Mara's suspicions deepen and Detective Shaw begins connecting three seemingly unrelated deaths, Elias must confront the question he has spent years avoiding:

Is he a devoted caretaker protecting the dignity of death-or simply a murderer who has mistaken loneliness for moral authority?

The Mortician is a haunting psychological crime novel about grief, ritual, isolation, obsession, and a gentle man who becomes dangerous when he decides that his reasons are sufficient. It asks whether kindness can coexist with evil-and whether being capable of love makes a person any less capable of destruction.
