After Craig LaMountain, an auto mechanic from New York, retired to Ruckersville, Virginia, he invited other local Vietnam veterans to donate their own war artifacts to the collection in his shed. Before long, the collection became a full-fledged museum, a site of storytelling, and a dose of medicine for Vietnam veterans seeking to heal from or reconnect with their service in Southeast Asia in the 1960s. At the museum, the veterans found a venue to share with their wives, children, and grandchildren the stories that had gone unspoken. It was a space to be seen, heard, and appreciated. And for students and younger family members, the informal feel of the former barn shed created a comfortable space to ask real, honest questions.
Perhaps if more of us truly listened to elders - military veterans or others - who carry stories of how they have worked through their struggles, we might better equip ourselves for when we need that same strength and openness to forgive ourselves when struggle inevitably challenges us.
