Donald Parrillo was born Dec. 13th, 1930, the second son of William and Josephine Parrillo. William, the son of Italian immigrants, had worked his way through law school and made a fortune defending gangsters, most prominently Al Capone. That placed Donnie's childhood smack dab in the eye of the storm, in the largest and best-run organized crime syndicate in the 1950s United States: The Chicago Outfit. He grew up in an environment where his father regularly met organized crime leaders in the family kitchen, including the most undisputedly powerful crime boss in Chicago: Sam "The Cigar" Giancana. There in the Near West Side, aka "Little Italy," and Oak Park, Illinois, Donnie graduated from Oak Park High School in 1948; and Loyola University in 1952, where he earned a degree in Economics. His career path launched him into bank ownership, complete with FBI clearance. One day, an old-time bookmaker approached Donnie. "The Cigar wants to see you," he said. "Tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock, go and visit your father's grave." Who showed up? The Cigar. He wanted to ask a "favor" of Donnie to run for Alderman of the First Ward of the City of Chicago. Donnie ran, won, and "loved every minute" of that job.
