The Natural History of a Savant (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025388823)

"The Natural History of a Savant" is a profound and insightful examination of the life, psychology, and social role of the intellectual and scientific researcher. Written by the Nobel Prize-winning physiologist Charles Richet, this work moves beyond the technicalities of laboratory science to explore the internal world of the "savant"-the dedicated seeker of truth. Richet categorizes the various types of scientists, analyzing their motivations, their peculiar habits, and the unique challenges they face within the academic and social landscape.

Through a blend of scientific observation and philosophical reflection, the book delves into the temperament required for breakthrough discovery and the often-misunderstood nature of the intellectual pursuit. Richet discusses the qualities of memory, imagination, and perseverance that define the great minds of history. This study serves as both a sociological document and a psychological portrait, offering readers a rare glimpse into the mind of those who dedicate their lives to the advancement of human knowledge. It remains a significant contribution to the understanding of the scientific persona and the history of ideas.
