The Never-Enough Machine: A Brief History of Wanting More, from Stone Tools to Artificial Intelligence (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798188087197)

Your smart ring scores your sleep before you've even opened your eyes. You finally got the promotion, the house, the upgrade you'd wanted for years - and felt the pull toward the next one almost before the old one had landed.

You are not greedy, or broken, or bad at gratitude. You are running a program 2.5 million years in the making.

For as long as there have been humans, we have been able to picture a life the body and the world cannot yet deliver. That gap - between what the mind imagines and what reality supplies - is the oldest engine we carry, and it has never once idled. To close it, we build patches: a sharpened stone, a controlled fire, written words, cities, the steam engine, the navigation app, the algorithm. Every patch works. And every patch quietly raises the floor of "normal," so that yesterday's luxury becomes today's baseline - and the wanting starts again, one rung higher.

The Never-Enough Machine gives this loop a name - the Compensation Spiral - and follows it from the first stone tool to artificial intelligence, to show why the most capable species on Earth is also the one that can never feel it has enough. This is not another book about the hedonic treadmill, or about Stone Age bodies lost in a modern world. It is about something sharper and more present: how the very tools we build to help us end up raising the objective bar that everyone is measured against - and what it takes to keep up.

Rigorously sourced and told through vivid, real scenes - a flooded eighteenth-century coal mine, the first telegraph order that overruled a railway timetable, an ICU where the alarms never stop - it ends not in fear but in something rarer: a clear-eyed way to notice the moment the machine is answering for you, and, when it truly matters, to answer for yourself.

A sweeping, human, and unsettling account of why enough is never enough - for readers of Sapiens, Dopamine Nation, and The Molecule of More.

Andy Lee spent 25 years on the front lines of internet product design and development, living through the whole arc of the internet from its birth to its ubiquity. He is the originator of the Consciousness-Soma Mismatch Hypothesis. The Never-Enough Machine is his first book.
