Jake Jackson grew up in a small, unassuming town in rural Illinois. As he heads into his mid-twenties, his life seems to be following a predictable, comfortable path ... until one fateful day when he has a chance encounter with a stranger on the back streets of Chicago who appears to be homeless-but things may not be what they appear to be.

Asked to take care of the stranger's companion, a little dog named Milo, Jake is confronted with an unexplainable mystery when the dog he has agreed to take care of runs into an abandoned factory and vanishes without a trace.
