The Office of Indian Affairs: Its History, Activities, and Organization (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781025872827)

"The Office of Indian Affairs: Its History, Activities, and Organization" provides an exhaustive examination of the federal agency responsible for managing the relationship between the United States government and Native American tribes. Written by Laurence F. Schmeckebier, this scholarly work traces the evolution of the office from its early origins under the War Department to its eventual establishment within the Department of the Interior. It offers a detailed analysis of the administrative structures, legal frameworks, and policy shifts that defined federal oversight during a pivotal era in American history.

The book explores the diverse responsibilities of the office, including the management of tribal lands, the administration of education and healthcare services, and the handling of legal and financial affairs. Schmeckebier delves into the internal organization of the agency, detailing the functions of various divisions and the roles of field agents. By documenting the operational history of the Bureau, the work serves as a vital resource for understanding the complexities of institutional governance and its impact on Indigenous populations. This volume remains an essential reference for historians, political scientists, and researchers interested in the history of federal Indian policy and the administrative development of the American state.
