The Open Door and the Mandates System (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025883106)

"The Open Door and the Mandates System" provides a rigorous examination of the economic and political mechanisms established under the League of Nations during the interwar period. Authored by Benjamin Gerig with contributions from the distinguished scholar William E. Rappard, this work delves into the principle of the 'Open Door'-a policy designed to ensure equal commercial opportunity for all nations-and its specific application within the territories governed by the mandates system.

The text explores the complex interplay between the administrative authority of mandatory powers and the collective oversight of the international community. Through a detailed analysis of legal frameworks and administrative practices, the authors assess how the mandate system attempted to reconcile the competing interests of sovereign states with the evolving standards of international governance and economic fairness.

Valuable for scholars of diplomatic history, international law, and political science, "The Open Door and the Mandates System" offers profound insights into the early 20th-century efforts to institutionalize global cooperation. It remains a vital study for understanding the origins of modern international administration and the historical challenges of managing global trade and territorial responsibilities within a multilateral framework.
