Book Two, The Withlacoochee Renegades, is the story of their return to Georgia during times many considered more horrible than the war itself, "The Unholy Reconstruction Period," where Corruption outnumbered Christianity in the Occupational Government. Clifford received a telegram telling of the murder of one of his brothers and the threat of the same to his other brother and father. Clifford Brown and his bride arrive to find the worst, and not only to this family, but to almost all of the home folk. He then forms and leads a vigilante group, that the local newspaper names, "The Withlacoochee Renegades," until most of the corruption is cleaned from the area and many of those responsible for their cruel deeds are either dead, arrested, or have fled the state. The cost of this cleaning is so great that one wonders where a man finds the strength the bear it.
