His particular focus is the relationships and community of the greater Apopka area. He relates the living conditions, relations, jobs, and businesses of the people in the area from the times of the Timucua tribe through current day. Topics include slavery, turpentine production, citrus production, progress from horse and riverboat to automotive transportation, Jim Crow segregation laws and their effects, education over the centuries, and the effect of education on the lives of residents living 'below the TO&A Railroad tracks'. Perrine Slim, Apopka nurtured, attended his first eight years of formal education at the Clarcona Colored School. He then attended Hungerford High School, a private school for people of color, in completion of his twelve years of education. Slim is a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Navy on the USS General Mann TAP112. He proudly served from 1951-1954 above the 38th Parallel. Work took Perrine Slim from Apopka, to New York, to Miami. His heart has always been in citrus production.
