The Percentage: Rumpelstiltskin and the Cost of Everything That Follows (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798258743374)

Maya Desai has built her company on precision-clean models, controlled growth, and the belief that systems behave the way they're designed to. But when a sudden cash flow crisis threatens to collapse everything she's built, Maya makes a decision she never thought she would: she takes a private loan from a man known only as Silk.

No paperwork. No negotiation. No friction.

Just a number-and a way out.

Within weeks, the company doesn't just recover-it explodes. Growth surges beyond projections. Investors compete for access. Deals close effortlessly, as if the market itself has shifted in her favor. It feels like luck. Then like brilliance. Then like inevitability.

Until Maya notices the clause.

It appears in every new contract-subtle, shifting, impossible to isolate but always present. Language referencing derivative value. Originating consideration. A silent stakeholder whose claim expands the more successful she becomes. Her ownership begins to erode without any formal sale. Control slips in increments too small to trigger alarm, but too precise to ignore.

At first, her legal team dismisses it as standard language. Then they stop being able to explain it at all.

As Maya digs deeper, she finds others-founders, creators, operators-who experienced the same impossible rise. The same quiet loss of control. The same moment, usually private, when help appeared and they agreed without fully understanding what they were accepting.

And always, somewhere in the language:

Silkens Trumpil, or its assigns...

The name persists across contracts, across companies, across years. It doesn't belong-and yet everything seems to belong to it.

Desperate to break free, Maya tracks the structure behind the clauses themselves, mapping how they evolve as her success grows. What she uncovers isn't a hidden trick, but something far more unsettling: a system that doesn't deceive, doesn't coerce, and doesn't need to hide-because it only enforces what has already been agreed to.

Then, in a moment of exhausted clarity, she sees it.

The name isn't new. It's just... arranged.

Rumpelstiltskin.

Armed with the truth, Maya confronts the man behind the deal-finally calling him by what he is, certain that understanding the system will give her a way out.

He doesn't deny it.

He doesn't resist.

He simply nods.

"That's correct."

And nothing changes.

Because the name was never a weakness. It was confirmation.

There is no hidden clause to exploit. No deception to expose. Every contract is valid. Every term enforceable. Every outcome earned. The system isn't broken-it's working exactly as intended, converting desperation into agreement, and agreement into ownership.

And Maya agreed to all of it.

Now, as her company reaches heights she once thought impossible, she is forced to confront the truth:

The more successful she becomes, the less of it she owns.

And the only question that remains is not how to escape-

But how much she's willing to lose.

THE PERCENTAGE is a literary thriller about systems that don't break, agreements that outlive understanding, and the quiet horror of realizing the price was always fair-you just didn't know what it was.
