Myung Ae Lee is a children's book author and illustrator based in South Korea. With The Plastic Island, she received the Golden Plaque at the Biennial of Bratislava (BIB) and the Silver Award at the Nami Concours in 2015. When she released this new edition ten years later, in 2025, she remarked: "Since the first publication of this book ten years ago, the plastic island has grown into an even larger island. I can sense this island will only continue grow, eventually reaching our shores. To capture this urgent reality more clearly, I have removed unnecessary elements in this new edition." She received another Golden Apple at BIB in 2021 and Silver Award at the Nami Concours in 2017 for her book Tomorrow Will Be Clear. Both books were also selected for the Bologna Illustrators of the Year.
