The Problem of the Large Family in Canada: Its Solution: Family Allowances (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025922775)

"The Problem of the Large Family in Canada: Its Solution: Family Allowances" is a significant historical exploration of social welfare and economic policy in early 20th-century Canada. Written by Leon Lebel, this work addresses the socioeconomic challenges faced by large families and proposes a structured system of family allowances as a viable solution to ensure national prosperity and social stability.

The text delves into the demographic trends of the era, the financial burdens of child-rearing, and the moral and civic arguments for state-supported financial assistance. As a foundational piece of Canadian social science literature, the book examines the intersection of sociology, economics, and public policy. Lebel argues that the stability of the nation depends on the health and sustainability of the family unit, advocating for reforms that would eventually shape the Canadian welfare state.

This work provides valuable insight for historians, sociologists, and those interested in the evolution of social security and family law. By analyzing the struggles of the large family through a lens of collective responsibility, Lebel offers a compelling historical perspective on the early advocacy for social safety nets in North America.
