The Prodigal Country (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798184834726)

Hungary, 1989-2022. Two brothers. One philosophy each. Thirty years to find out where they were wrong.

When the Berlin Wall falls, Stefan Varga, twenty-two, chooses to stay in the industrial city of Miskolc and fight for the workers his father spent his life among. His younger brother Andrei takes a scholarship to Budapest, discovers Hayek, and eventually finds himself co-authoring austerity packages in Brussels that he knows are unjust - and signs them anyway.

The Prodigal Country follows both brothers from the ruins of Hungarian communism through the failures of shock-therapy capitalism to the rise of democratic backsliding and, finally, to the slow, specific, unglamorous work of building something real in one post-industrial district.

Stefan's Marxism was never cynical. It was grief with a systematic vocabulary - and it leads him, over two decades, through a charismatic populist he endorses and should not have, a cooperative that fails for all the right reasons, and a deputy whose corruption turns out to be a mirror held up to his own philosophy. Andrei's Hayekianism is genuine and often correct - but he signed a document he knew was wrong, and has spent years carrying that.

Both brothers are right about half of what they believe. Both are wrong in ways they cannot see from inside their frameworks. And the novel they inhabit refuses to adjudicate between them cheaply - insisting instead on the full cost of each position, the genuine insight in each, and the thing that neither framework alone can provide: the grace to confess, the humility to receive correction, and the willingness to build something small and real rather than something large and theoretical.

Written in the tradition of serious fiction that takes ideas seriously without being merely a novel of ideas, The Prodigal Country speaks four languages simultaneously: to Christians, it is the Prodigal Son told at civilizational scale; to libertarians and Randians, it is a vindication of the creative individual that acknowledges what Rand could not - that man needs forgiveness as much as he needs reason; to conservatives, it is a defense of the particular against the abstract; and to those on the left who are honest enough to follow the argument where it leads, it is a mirror held with compassion, not contempt.

At its center is a father who liked terrible detective novels, over-seasoned everything with paprika, and was afraid of dogs. He was not a symbol. He was a man. The novel keeps returning to that.
