After completing her BFA in painting at Cal Arts in 1970, Elizabeth Claman studied acting and filmmaking, then spent seven years working in the film industry, first as an actress, and later as a production assistant, script reader and stylist. Abandoning her film career in 1978 to discover a lifestyle more in harmony with her daughter's, she became an educator, and spent the next thirty years teaching various combinations of French, art, English and creative writing at all different levels, from kindergarten through grad school. Along the way, she earned an MA in creative writing (San Francisco State University, 1986), and a Ph.D. in comparative literature (University of Oregon, 1997). Over the years, her poetry and short fiction have appeared in numerous small press reviews, such as Alaska Quarterly Review, River Styx, Many Mountains Moving, Hubbub, and Negative Capability, among others, and in the anthologies, Passionate Lives, Family Reunion, Outsiders, Night Out, and Intimate Kisses. Her book reviews were published in numerous issues of Radix magazine in the 1980s. From 1993 to 1998, she was editor-in-chief of Queen of Swords Press, publishing anthologies of fiction and poetry on issues such as child abuse, domestic violence and menopause. At present she is retired, and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, writing, reading, gardening and growing in faith. Her daughter and granddaughter also live in California.
