John came from a priestly family and was probably a member of the sect of the Essenes or Nazarenes, the sect to which Jesus of Nazareth also belonged. During the Jewish war of AD 66-73 against the Romans, he fled to Ephesus, where he joined the Christian community and later became its leader due to his priestly background. He lived as an exile and religious undesirable on the island of Patmos during AD 96 but was pardoned after the Roman Emperor Domitian's death.
