The Purgatory Of Prisoners: Or An Intermediate Stage Between The Prison And The Public (1857) (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781165085255)

The Purgatory of Prisoners: Or An Intermediate Stage Between The Prison and The Public, written by Orby Shipley and published in 1857, is a book that explores the idea of a transitional stage for prisoners between incarceration and re-entry into society. The book argues that the current prison system is flawed in its inability to properly rehabilitate prisoners and prepare them for life outside of prison walls. Shipley proposes the creation of a new institution, a ""purgatory"" for prisoners, which would serve as a halfway house between prison and the outside world. In this purgatory, prisoners would receive education, job training, and counseling to help them reintegrate into society and avoid recidivism. The book draws on historical examples of similar institutions, such as the hulks (old ships used as prisons) in England, as well as contemporary models in other countries. It also addresses objections to the idea of a purgatory, such as concerns about cost and the potential for abuse.Overall, The Purgatory of Prisoners is a thought-provoking and innovative work that challenges traditional notions of the purpose and effectiveness of prisons. It offers a unique perspective on the criminal justice system and proposes a solution that aims to provide better outcomes for both prisoners and society as a whole. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
