The Red Apricot Venturing Beyond (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798196586965)

When her college-aged son asks her over WhatsApp - "Mom, why did you choose Dad? Why specifically him?" - Rebecca Tang, an auditor and an educator writing from Saipan in 2026, finds herself transported back to the grey-brick alleyway of 1980s Shenyang: a two-foot gap between her family's back door and a neighbor's spite wall. That wall - suffocating, physical, absolute - becomes the book's animating metaphor.

紅杏出牆 (Red Apricot Venturing Over the Wall) is a bilingual memoir in twenty chapters that traces Rebecca's journey from a rigidly rule-bound childhood in northeastern China through immigration to the Northern Mariana Islands, professional reinvention, marriage, parenthood, and the slow, deliberate art of choosing - and re-choosing - a life partner.

Drawing on the classical Tang dynasty poem by Ye Shaoweng, where a single sprig of red apricot reaching past a garden wall symbolizes irrepressible vitality, Rebecca reframes the Chinese idiom. The apricot branch, long coded as female transgression, becomes an emblem of the soul's need for oxygen, for growth, for a love wide enough to let it bloom rather than prune it back.
